Our twelve-strong Parish Choir is the focus of Christ Church’s musical life. The Parish Choir sings Mass twice or three times a month, enhancing and illustrating our worship with anthems, psalm settings, mass settings and of course a range of hymns. The choir also sings a full Choral Evensong service once every two months.
We enjoy rehearsing a broad range of beautiful and challenging sacred music: past and upcoming landmarks include a performance of the end of the St. John Passion during the stripping of the altar on Maundy Thursday; a joint Harvest performance of Elgar’s Fear Not, O Land with the choir of the Sophienkirche in Berlin; a candlelit performance of Lauridsen’s O nata lux to mark Candlemas; a liturgical performance of Fauré’s Messe basse for All Souls’ Day; and a programme of music for choir and trumpet to mark Remembrance Sunday.
Other highlights of our calendar include an annual Nine Lessons and Carols service, an annual carolling trip to Canary Wharf and occasional concerts. In 2016, these were a full “come and sing” performance of Stainer’s Crucifixion and a joint performance of Fauré’s Requiem with the Parish Choir of All Saints, Poplar.
We are fiercely proud to be one of the few churches in east London able to field a full robed SATB choir consisting purely of volunteers from our local area. Our members include lawyers, financiers and teachers – as well as animal workers, pop musicians and retired Army Colonels! We are a very friendly and welcoming group, and enjoy socialising together at the Great Eastern after rehearsals.
The Parish Choir rehearses weekly on Thursdays from 8.15-9.45pm, with an optional note-learning session at 7.45pm. We are always keen to welcome new members – and prospective singers are warmly invited to email Jonathan Pease.
