Food Bank Volunteers - an appreciation

Dear Fr.Tom ,As you know I came today to do the Warm Space. As I walked in I thought "this isn't very warm", it was because all the doors were open and there was food everywhere! Then I realised that some of the  Food Bank volunteers were there, what a dedicated band of people they are, they were filling fifty odd bags with  provisions for the Christmas  period and sorting the tins into different groups for tomorrow . I joined in, I liked putting all the tins in lines it was a bit like playing shops, after a while my back began to ache and I soon grew tired of this new 'game' but couldn't stop because there really was so much to do! It really brought home to me how hard the Food ank people work and how little I do to help them normally. I thought about what Jenny was saying on Sunday about bringing light to people ,this dedicated group of people have been providing this service for over five years! I thought I was helping ,dropping the odd four pack of beans etc into the collection trolley at Asda with never a thought of how it would get to Church and be distributed to people who are in need of it. I suppose in a childish way I thought the Food Bank Fairies just waved a magic wand and it was all done. Now  I have seen just a little of the hard work that goes into running the food bank I will in future try to lend a hand. So well done to all Food Bank volunteers perhaps you could train any new Staff that Asda might be employing and give them a few tips on keeping the shelves fully stacked with 'in date' produce. I really admire you all , what would we do without you? Please try to give a little of your time to help, or even save strong carrier bags to help with the distribution," many hands make light work!"
