Barnardo’s Supported Lodgings Scheme (transitional housing for vulnerable young people)

Barnardo’s Supported Lodgings Service is a well-established UK programme that has recently launched in London. Barnardos recruit, train and support hosts that can offer support and lodgings to a young person leaving care, at a crucial time in their life. They work closely with hosts, helping them provide support that is tailored to the young person placed with them; such as help to finish their education, find a job or longer-term accommodation, as well as help to develop life skills such as cooking, housework, laundry and budgeting.

Supported Lodgings Scheme provides family-based support to young people who cannot live with their own families and who are not yet ready for independent living. A young person is provided with a room of their own in a private home living alongside a host and their family. They are a member of the household, but not expected to become a member of the family. At least one adult in the household is trained to provide practical and emotional support to assist a young person to develop the confidence and capability to live an independent adult life. Placements are provided for young people leaving care and at risk of homelessness who we assess to have low to medium level of need. To place a young person, there is a matching process to ensure that the host we are placing the young person with is able to effectively promote positive development for that specific young person. This generally takes between six to 12 weeks from referral to placing a young person. The Supported Lodgings Service recruits, trains and supports hosts that can offer support and lodgings to a young person leaving care, at a crucial time in their life. We work closely with hosts, helping them to provide support that is tailored to the young person’s needs. Placements typically last between six months and two years.
